Across the 11 communities, the project team used information developed from (1) Gulf of Maine Research Institute's monitoring sites, (2) data profiles compiled for each community, and (3) staff input through surveys, focus group discussions, and engagement workshops to identify an initial database of 62 vulnerable sites across the region vulnerable to climate change.

From the initial sites, the team to evaluated the significance and public value for each site using the following key metrics

  • Major travel corridor (e.g. Route 1, island access routes)

  • Sensitive infrastructure (e.g. wastewater treatment)

  • Economic importance (e.g. working waterfront)

  • Ecological significance (e.g. marsh, dunes)

  • Neighborhood resilience (e.g. mobile and older homes, socially vulnerable populations)

Based on the evaluation, 14 priority vulnerable sites were selected due to the potential for widespread negative impacts if/when the sites experiences climate hazards.
